Prayers To Know God's Will

It is important that you choose your career with care, so that you may really follow the vocation that God has destined for you. No day should pass without some prayer to this end. Often repeat with St. Paul: "Lord, what will you have me do?" - St. John Bosco

God has a plan for you! How can you know what it is?

Pray! Below are some prayers you can use to ask for light in recognizing your vocation. In your prayer, may God reveal to you His will for your life.

Prayer to know one’s vocation

Lord, I beseech thee to send down the Holy Spirit upon me to enlighten me that I may know the designs of thy Providence concerning me, and that filled with a sincere desire for my soul’s salvation, I may say with the young man in the gospel: “what must I do to be saved?” All states of life are before me; but still undecided what to do, I await thy commands. I offer myself to thee without restriction, without reserve, with a most perfect submission.

Far be it from me, O Lord, to oppose thy wisdom, and, unfaithful to the inspiration of thy grace, to strive to subject the will of the Creator to the caprice of the creature. It is not for the servant to choose the way in which he will serve his master; do thou lay upon me what commands thou pleasest. My lot is in thy hands. “Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.” I cast myself at thy feet and I am ready, if it be thy will, to sacrifice myself as a victim to thee for the remainder of my days, in such wise as thou shalt deem most worthy of thy greatness.

Spirit of Piety, inspire the affections of my parents and guide their projects according to the counsels of thy wisdon. O Holy Spirit, I sincerely desire to consult thee who art all wise; grant that my parents also may submit themselves to thy decrees, faithfully and without reserve.
Amen.

Prayer to Know God’s will

God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Author of glory, grant me spiritual wisdom and revelation. Enlighten the eyes of my mind with a deep knowledge of You and Your holy will. May I understand of what nature is the hope to which You call me, what is the wealth of the splendor of Your inheritance among the Saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of Your power toward me.
Amen.

Prayer for Choosing a State of Life

My God, You Who are the God of wisdom and good counsel, You Who read in my heart a sincere desire to please You alone and to direct myself in regard to my choice of a state of life, in conformity with Your Holy will in all things; by the intercession of the most holy Virgin, my Mother, and of my Patron Saints, grant me the grace to know that state of life which I ought to choose, and to embrace it when known, in order that thus I may seek Your glory and increase it, work out my own salvation and deserve the heavenly reward which You have promised to those who do Your holy will.
Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, Eternal Love of the Father and of the Son, take me unto Yourself as Your vessel of election and disciple. Direct me constantly, and uphold me in the path of my sacred vocation. Illumine my mind, sanctify my soul and take possession of my entire being. Cover my eyes that I may not see evil; close my ears that I may not listen to idle words; bridle my tongue that I may never fail against Your holy commandment of Charity; purify my heart that sin may not remain therein. Be my Supreme Peace and Joy, be my Guide: and abide within me always; whatsoever You forbid me, I will renounce; and whatsoever You command, in Your strength and love I will do. Lead me, then, into the fulness of Your truth!
Amen.

For God’s Guidance

Father in heaven, you made me Your child and call me to walk in the light of Christ. Free me from darkness and keep me in the light of Your truth. The light of Jesus has scattered the darkness of hatred and sin. Called to that light, I ask for Your guidance. Form my life in Your truth, my heart in Your love. Through the Holy Eucharist give me the power of Your grace that I may walk in the light of Jesus and serve Him faithfully.
Amen.

Prayer to Know One’s Vocation

Lord Jesus, up until now You have been quietly preparing me to be Your disciple. Now the time of preparation is ending. I seem to hear You say to me as once to Peter: “Will you also go away?” You were saddened then by friends who failed You. But Peter did not fail. “Lord,” he said, “to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” I stand with Peter. Through prayer and counsel, show me, Lord, where it is in Your vineyard that You want me to serve. Then give me strength to be faithful. Mary, Mother and Model, help me to respond in generous love to the call of your divine Son.
Amen.

Reflection on God's Call

(Cardinal Newman)

God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission - I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good - I shall do His work - I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it, if I do but keep His commandments and serve Him in my calling.

Therefore I will trust Him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him; in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him; if I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends; He may throw me among strangers. He may make my spirits sink, hide the future from me - still He knows what He is about.
Amen.

Prayer

God, You have chosen the apostles to make disciples of all nations and by baptism and confirmation have called all of us to build up Your Holy Church. We earnestly implore You to choose from among us, Your children, many Priests, Brothers, and sisters, who will gladly spend their entire lives to make You known and loved by all. Amen.
Amen.

Prayer to Recognize a Vocation

Lord, I thank You for the gifts You have given me, especially for life, love, family, and friends. Help me to know myself better and to know my talents, as I pray, study and decide on my life’s work. Help me to see and understand the path You open for me. Help me to choose a life’s work which will be in response to Your loving plan for me. If I am being invited to follow You as a Priest, Brother, Sister, Missionary, or Lay consecrated person, give me a generous heart to respond to Your challenging call and the strength to follow You wherever You lead me. Amen.
Amen.

Prayer for Perseverance in Discernment

You have made my heart to be filled with Your Love and with Your Life. You have created me to give Your Love and Your Life to others. Guide me this day and always. Give me strength of heart to ever SEEK, FIND, and FOLLOW Your call of Love. Amen.
Amen.

Prayer

Loving God, in Baptism you ask me to act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with You.

Help me to know how to bring justice and love to a world that is desperately in need of You and Your values.

Strengthen me, as well as my brothers and sisters, with the courage and generosity to respond to Your invitation.

I ask this, in the name of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to Respond to Your Vocation

Lord Jesus, hear my desires, and bring to maturity the seed You have sown in my heart.

It is You, Lord, Who sought me out, found me and made me Your own through Baptism. Empower me now with Your spirit to willingly proclaim Your healing love to our fractured world.

Help me to understand how you want me to do this. Grant me an eagerness to respond to the invitation You extend to me..."Come and see." Complete the work You have begun in me for the praise of Your Name.
Amen.
