How to Say the Rosary

"Continue to pray the Rosary every day."

- Our Lady of Fatima to Lucia

  1. Beginning at the crucifix, make the Sign of the Cross, then kiss the crucifix and say the "Apostles' Creed."

  2. On the first bead after the crucifix, pray one "Our Father" for the intentions of the Holy Father.

  3. On the three beads that follow, recite three "Hail Mary's", one for faith, one for hope, and one for charity.

  4. Say one "Glory Be" on the following large bead.

  5. Announce the Mystery of the Rosary for the first decade. After a short reflection on this Mystery, recite the "Our Father".

  6. On each of the ten beads that follow, say ten "Hail Mary's " as you meditate on the Mystery.

  7. On the following large bead, recite the "Glory Be".

  8. After the "Glory Be" of each decade, recite the prayer Our Lady asked for at Fatima: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, and save us from the fires of Hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy Mercy.

  9. After announcing the second Mystery with a short meditation, recite one "Our Father," then follow 6, 7, and 8 for the next decades.

  10. After reciting all 5 decades of the Rosary, pray the "Hail Holy Queen."

Q. What are the Mysteries of the Rosary?

A. Each mystery is a different episode in the lives of Jesus and Mary - i.e. the Birth of Jesus, the Resurrection, etc. There are fifteen mysteries in the Rosary: the five Joyful Mysteries begin with the Annunciation and depict the events of the childhood of Jesus; the five Sorrowful Mysteries depict the Passion of Jesus; and the Glorious Mysteries depict the Resurrection and the events which followed it.

For a complete listing of the Mysteries of the Rosary and pictures to go with each mystery, view the
Mysteries of the Rosary Image Gallery.

Q. What does "meditating" mean?

A. Meditating is thinking about holy ideas (such as "the holiness of God" or "how prayer helps us"), people (such as the life of Our Lady or the saints), and events, (such as Jesus' Passion and Resurrection.) In the Rosary, you meditate on a different mystery of the lives of Jesus and Mary during each decade.
