Who Gets the Benefit of Your Lessons?(Reprinted from Blossoms At Our Lady's Feet Catholic teen newsletter, Autumnn 1999 issue)Fall is in full swing now. Outside, the leaves are piling up on the lawn. Inside, the assignments and lessons are piling up, too. Sometimes, this can get rather overwhelming! However, there is a way to persevere in your work, and at the same time help somebody and feel happy yourself: offer up each lesson or assignment for a particular person. At the top of your lesson or assignment, write the name of the person you would like to offer up that lesson or assignment for. This person could be anyone - a particular soul in Purgatory, a friend or relative, a political leader, the Holy Father, a person who is sick or lonely. . . Then, when you do your work, you're motivated - not only to do your work, but to do your best on it because you don't want to "cheat out" the person you are offering up you work for. So give it a try. . .who knows, this might be your best school year! Spiritual TreasureContributed by a Grade 11 student, CanadaIs there any subject you particularly dislike? Do you have to do an unpleasant assignment today? Offer it up as a sacrifice to God, and store up spiritual treasure for yourself in Heaven! "Each day can be made into a sacrifice, especially if there are tests or exams that day. I found that offering my whole day as a sacrifice for God worked wonders, and completely changed the way I saw my schoolwork. Sometimes I particularly did not feel like doing my homework, and every sentence, every word was quite a sacrifice to write! Sometimes just one letter in your homework can be a bigger sacrifice than fasting all day! It is doing just such small things as this which help us get to Heaven. St. Therese of Lisieux became a saint by doing little things for the love of God; she would pick up a pin/needle off the floor and dedicate her action 'for the Love of Christ.' As she said herself, 'Everything leads us to Jesus!'" How do you, as a Catholic student, use your faith to help you with your schoolwork throughout the year? Send your ideas to us! We could include them on this page! |
