Brigittine Monks of the Order of the Most Holy SaviorAbout the Brigittine Monks | A Day With the Brigittine Monks | Contact the Monks
The Brigittine Monks of the Most Holy Savior is a cloistered Order dedicated to a life of prayer. In 1976 our founder, Brother Benedict Kirby, felt called to found a cloistered contemplative community dedicated to prayer which would follow the charism of St. Bridget of Sweden. With permission of his bishop and after consulting with the Brigittine Nuns in England and the Brigittine Sisters of the Casa di S. Brigida in Rome (the house in which St. Bridget lived and died), he began the restoration of the Brigittine Monks who had died out in 1863. Our Constitutions were approved by the Vatican in 1991 and the Community was erected as a Priory "Sui Iuris" (meaning "one of a kind").
Our style of life is monastic, according to the Rule of St. Augustine, and given to prayer and contemplation. This is an ancient style of life in its concept of withdrawal from the main stream of the activities of socity. However, we seek to place its ancient traditions into this era, conveying its attraction and needfulness to the culture of our times. The Brigittine monastic habit, dark grey in color, is worn. Following the original pattern of monasticism, the monks do not ordinarily receive Holy Orders.
