A Day with the Brigittine Monks

We rise at 4:45 in the morning and begin our community prayer in chapel at 5:05 am. After prayer there is an hour during which we have breakfast, make our beds, do some private praying and spritual reading. At 7:45 am we have morning prayer together in the chapel. Then at 8:00 am we have daily Mass. After Mass we then go to our work assignments and work for 3 1/2 hours.

At noon we come together again in chapel for community prayer followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for approximately 15 minutes, and afterwards we have our main meal. After washing dishes, we then have approximately two hours for private prayer, Scripture reading and solitude time. At 3:00 pm we come together in the chapel for mid-afternoon prayer. This is followed by 2 hours of work. At 6:00 pm we meet again in chapel for evening prayer. This takes approximately 20 minutes. This is followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for about 10 minutes. We then proceed to our refectory, where we have our evening meal.

After the meal we have recreation for an hour. Typically during recreation you will find the monks listening to classical music, talking, reading various magazines that we receive, playing cards, or going for a walk. At 8:00 pm we end our recreation and go to chapel for our night prayer. This ends at 8:30 pm, and then we are free to retire for the night.
