The Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word is a Catholic, Religious Community of Priests and Brothers founded in 1987 by Mother M. Angelica, Foundress of the Eternal Word Television Network. Our mission is to preach and teach the Roman Catholic faith through modern means of communication, and by spiritual retreats.

Imitating Jesus Christ by following the example of St. Francis of Assisi, we practice a combined active-contemplative spirituality. We work with and serve the people of God, but we also retire to the quiet of the Chapel for common recitation of the Divine Office, our community Rosary and a daily holy hour in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament.

Our particular charism is characterized by Franciscan naturalness and enthusiasm in relating to others the gift of our Catholic faith. In particular, we emphasize devotion to the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, to His most holy Mother, and faithful observance of Church teachings.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the summit of our day and the source of all our apostolic activities. One of our daily Masses is broadcast on EWTN television and radio where we are joined by viewers and listeners from around the world.

Living and praying together in community, we receive mutual strength and support from one another as each Brother strives for holiness, in imitation of Jesus and the Saints.

Brothers of our Community who are ordained as Priests serve the needs of the Church primarily through the daily offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and hearing Confessions. Together with our Permanent Brothers they also take an active role in conducting spiritual retreats, training members who are still in formation, assisting in the television and radio apostolates, and service through various works of mercy - hospital visits and sick calls, prison visitation, and assistance to the poor.

During formation the Brothers are introduced to Religious Life and grounded in the Franciscan tradition. They study the fundamentals of the Catholic Faith and are exposed to the apostolates of the Community. Following a one-year Postulancy and a one-year Novitiate, they take temporary vows. Those who are pursuing the Priesthood then begin their philosophical training in our House of Studies, while those called to the Permanent Brotherhood begin to participate more fully in the media and retreat apostolates and in serving the common needs of the Community. Temporary Vows are renewed each year for at least three years, followed by Perpetual Vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience.
