Lay Associations
"The members of Secular Institutes are, by vocation and mission, the point of encounter between the initiative of God and the expectation of creation: the initiative of God which they bring into the world through love and intimate union with God; the expectation of creation, which they share in the daily and secular condition of life with others."
-Pope John Paul II
There are a number of associations for lay people. Some of them are actual Catholic institutes which are organized almost like religious orders for lay people. Others are simply groups of the faithful which promote various devotions or dedicate themselves to particular apostolates.
- Opus Dei - a personal prelature (i.e. a Catholic organization with its own bishop) whose aim is to help the ordinary person living in the world to sanctify his or her daily life and work. Members can be married, single, or priests.
- Miles Jesu - "soldiers of Jesus," a form of consecrated life in the Church for the laity, known as an Ecclesial Family of Consecrated Life. It includes both married and single members, as well as priests.
- Opus Mariae Mediatrici - A private association of the faithful, comprised of both lay and clerical members, whose objective is to spread the kingdom of Our Lord Jesus Christ through true devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
- Franciscan Missionaries of Jesus Crucified - for the disabled of all kinds or anyone willing or called to help people who suffer in any way. The main charism of the Institute is to help Jesus carry his cross and unite our suffering with his for the conversion of sinners and the Church. For more information, read this article
