A Day with the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus

The following schedule will give you a general idea of what our days are like. However, our schedules do differ in each level of formation, and they are also slightly different for each sister depending on her apostolate.

In prayer before the Blessed Sacrament 5:00: Rising
    5:25: Morning Prayer and Meditation
    6:20: Spiritual reading
    6:45: Community Rosary
    7:00: Holy Mass
    7:30: Silent breakfast
    8:00: Off to our duties!
12:00: Office of Readings, Daytime Prayer
12:30: Dinner - this meal is a talking meal!

    Apostolate
    1:00: Examination of Conscience
    1:15: Duties again!
2:45: Afternoon Snack (because the sisters live such active lives as well as devoting themselves to prayer, our Mother Foundress was adamant that each sister receive plenty of nourishment to keep her in good health!).
3:00: Study Hall (for formation only)
    5:00: Evening Prayer and Meditation
6:00: Silent supper (one of the sisters reads aloud from some spiritual work)
    7:00: Community recreation
8:00: Night Prayer (after night prayer begins Grand Silence)

Community life and the hidden life of the cloister are very important to a Carmelite. Even though we do leave the convent to work in the apostolate, our work is always located on the same grounds as our convent so that we may remain close to the cloister at all times and return to it frequently.

On Saturdays we rise at 6:00 and on Sundays we rise at 6:30. Sundays are a special day of rest for the sisters when we may spend more time in prayer, visiting with one another, and playing musical instruments or sports. We have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament twice a week, Tuesdays and Sundays, as well as on First Fridays. Once a month the sisters take a silent day of recollection, and each sister makes a 6-day retreat once a year.
