Sisters of Our Lady ImmaculateAbout the Sisters of Our Lady | A Day With the Sisters of Our Lady | Contact the Sisters![]() The Sisters of Our Lady Immaculate are a new community of religious women founded in Canada in 1977 by Mother Mary Josephine Mulligan and Rev. Father W.L. Ryan in response to the needs of the Church in our times. The Sisters live a contemplative-active community life and are loyal to the Successor of St. Peter. The key elements of their spirituality are devotion to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, and devotion to Our Blessed Mother, while their apostolate is primarily the teaching of our Holy Faith, especially through Catechesis, the education of youth, and other related works, as well as the works of mercy. SpiritualityIn making profession of the Evangelical Counsels of Chastity, Poverty, and Obedience, the Sisters are answering a divine call to live their lives for God alone. Called to a life of apostolic contemplation the Sisters seek to draw from authentic sources of Catholic spirituality the necessary strength and knowledge to cultivate a deep spirit of prayer and contemplation. The sacred Liturgy, being the foundation of the spiritual life of a community, is, for the Sisters, the foundation of their spiritual lives. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours are part of our daily prayer life. There is a daily time set aside for meditation, Holy Hour of Adoration, the complete fifteen decades of the Holy Rosary, and the reading of Sacred Scripture and spiritual books. In addition to these daily times of prayer and contemplation, the Sisters have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Penance frequently, and to make every month a day of retreat, and once a year, an annual retreat of eight days. Devotion to Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament is of great importance in our lives. Father Ryan, our Father Founder, mentioned early on in the formation of our Community these words about what our devotion to the Blessed Sacrament would be: "I would hope that our young ladies are quite ordinary in every way. They don't have to be brilliant. They don't have to be outstanding in such a way that they might cause attention to be focused on them-- except in one thing -- in their love for the Blessed Sacrament. I hope that all the girls to whom Our Lord will give a vocation to this community will come to have such a love and devotion to Our Dear Lord in the Tabernacle that it will be the one great preoccupation of her whole life. If we can instill into every girl who knocks at our doors and asks for acceptance, a love of the Blessed Sacrament, we will have a powerhouse of sanctity which no power will ever destroy, whether it be the devil or the world."
Devotion to the Holy Mother of God has a very special place in the Community. As God came to us through Mary, the Sisters of Our Lady Immaculate go to God through her. The Sisters strive to imitate Mary by a deep interior life and by total abandonment to the will of God. A special devotion of ours is the daily recitation of the fifteen decades of her Rosary. Apostolate
CatechismIt is essential that our children have a strong faith if they are going to be able to cope with the problems and temptations of our modern-day society. And yet, so many of our children and young people are confused or uninformed about even the essential truths and practices of our Faith. Therefore we have chosen, as our primary apostolate, this important work of teaching Catechism. It is our prayer that God will abundantly bless our efforts to help children and adults to come to an adequate knowledge of their Catholic Faith. This is a work dear to the heart of our Holy Father Pope John Paul II.
"We can say, that to a large extent, we have become a mission country - paganism has made terrific inroads on our youth and on society as a whole. If any of us feel that we have a vocation to the missions, we can say with a great deal of justification that we will truly be missionaries - to be a leaven especially among the young." -Father Ryan
The Works of Mercy As our Lord said, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren you do unto Me." In giving love and care to the sick and elderly, the Sisters are actually serving Our Lord Himself. The Sisters have opened a retirement home to care for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of the elderly.
